Wilhelmina Steenbergen

Artist Statement

Shaping in paper developed from my earlier free-form pottery work and in the color finish I often try to recreate the effects of Raku glazing. In many cases found objects or fabrics are included in the pieces. However, I do not define them as pure collages, but rather as sculptures. Themes and shapes are generally derived from nature, the seasons and my daily experiences.

Resume

Wilhelmina Steenbergen was born and raised in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She began to get the feel of fibers at an early age. Her highly tactile sense has served her well as she has evolved as an artist.

In the late 70's and early 80's, she continued to express her love of fibers by creating original wall hangings in addition to knitting highly patterned sweaters and coats from wool and other materials that she carded, spun and dyed.

Although she came to the United States in 1982 planning to stay two years, she has become a permanent resident, presently living in Colorado Springs, CO.

In the late 80's she took courses through Bemis School of Art in Colorado Springs, Colorado in free form pottery and created raku glazed pottery within this medium.

It was a natural progression for her to begin experimenting with paper sculpture, a paper relief pressing process which incorporates the use of objects from nature, fabric and yarn she knows so intimately, with an application of acrylics, achieving a pottery raku look suitable to her sculptures.

She has exhibited in Austin, TX, Lakeway, TX, Wimberley, TX, Spicewood, TX, Manitou Springs, CO and Delft, the Netherlands.
