Gail Necker
Raised as a left-brained child, my academic degrees are all scientific. Although I was interested in many different arts and crafts as a young adult, there was never time to nurture my creative side. As I matured and began actively pursuing my many interests, I found my creativity began to evolve. Upon discovering gourds, I realized they were the perfect foundation for me – they can become almost anything. They can stand alone or be combined with almost any other kind of fiber – reed, vines, rattan, yarn, twine, even old sweaters. Staining, dyeing, and painting gourds allow them to explode with color – a vital element of my work which is all about color and textures. Unique embellishments add the final focal point to my work.
